Wheelchairs for Better Mobility PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 March 2007
Wheelchairs are a practical and affordable way of liberating mobility-impaired people from the confines of the home, helping them to get out and about, and to lead full and active lives. Many people have difficulty in doing the kinds of things other people take for granted – taking the kids to school, getting to the shops, or just going to meet friends. Wheelchairs give these people the opportunity to surmount such obstacles and take part in these everyday activities, and as such are well worth considering for those who currently have difficulty with their mobility.

Wheelchairs are available to suit all needs and budgets, from simple manually-operated wheelchairs to automatic chairs, as well as more specialized wheelchairs for those who are unable to use their arms to control their movement. This range of designs means that most mobility-impaired people can now find a wheelchair to fulfill their requirements.

Additionally, shops and public buildings are increasingly opening their facilities up to wheelchair users by building ramps, installing chairlifts where necessary, and generally improving access for those with impaired mobility. These changes have come about partly due to the realization that, on the part of businesses and public bodies, they were not catering to the requirements of all their potential customers, and partly due to new laws which require proper provision to be made for less mobile members of society.

For these reasons, wheelchairs are a very useful aid to those who previously might have struggled to get out of the house, and are becoming an increasingly common option for mobility-impaired people of all ages.
